Position Overview

City Year Tulsa is seeking a skilled, entrepreneurial, and strategic Managing Director of Development to work closely with the Executive Director, leadership team, and Site and national development teams to lead the development and implementation of fundraising strategies in Tulsa. The Managing Director of Development leads the implementation of the site’s private revenue strategy raising significant contributions to our operating budget. This person leads the team that builds and engages the community of stakeholders from private sectors to help City Year Tulsa meet its long term impact goals.

This position reports to the Executive Director, works closely with the Site Leadership and manages the Development team. This is a full-time position located in Tulsa, OK.

Job Description

Position Title: Managing Director of Development Organization: City Year Tulsa

Position Summary

The Managing Director of Development leads the strategy and implementation of City Year Tulsa's private revenue generation. Reporting to the executive director, this individual manages the Development team and works closely with site leadership to secure the necessary philanthropic resources to support and grow the organization's programs and initiatives. This role is responsible for engaging a wide community of stakeholders to meet City Year Tulsa's long-term impact goals and serves as a key member of the organization's Senior Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Strategy & Execution

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership for all of City Year Tulsa's private revenue efforts, including developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan.
  • Actively manage and expand a diverse portfolio of individual donors (including board members, alumni, and families) by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new prospects while expertly stewarding all current relationships across our major giving, corporate partnerships, and foundation relations portfolios.
  • Personally manage a portfolio of prospective and current donors, and be responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and closing of annual, major, and multi-year gifts.
  • Oversee the successful implementation of all donor stewardship programs, including volunteer activities and formal recognition, to ensure partnership commitments are fulfilled and community investment is deepened.
  • Develop and execute a strategy for fundraising events, including the annual City Year luncheon.
  • Oversee the growth of the Major Gifts Program and the corporate partnership program.
  • Manage the identification of new funding prospects and lead the grant strategy for foundations.
  • Ensure the successful achievement of all annual and multi-year revenue goals to support the site's strategic plans.

Team & Department Management

  • Manage the Development & Communications department, including hiring, coaching, and developing a team of high-performing professionals.
  • Build the team's skills in all areas of development, including major gifts, events, donor relations, grants, and stewardship.
  • Drive operational improvements and ensure that systems and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
  • Ensure accurate and secure maintenance of all donor records and information in the Salesforce database.
  • Foster a collaborative and authentic working environment that promotes team trust and professional growth.

Board & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work in partnership with the executive director and the City Year Tulsa Board to leverage their talents and coordinate their fundraising efforts.
  • Actively engage the Board and other key stakeholders to identify new prospects, secure introductions, and solicit donors.
  • Enhance the Board's fundraising involvement by understanding their giving patterns and encouraging their participation as donors and solicitors.
  • Provide primary staff support to the Board Development, Nominating, and Governance Committees.
  • Deliver regular, detailed reports on fundraising progress at Board and Committee meetings.

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, providing counsel on development, communications, and marketing perspectives.
  • In partnership with the executive director and chief of staff, prepare and submit annual budgets for development and marketing functions.
  • Serve as a passionate and effective representative of City Year's mission to donors, prospects, and the community.
  • Collaborate with the national Development team and staff from other City Year sites to share best practices and raise revenue.
  • Ensure all fundraising activities are conducted in alignment with the organization's mission, vision, values and policies.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in a nonprofit Development function with demonstrated success in creating and managing relationships with multiple donor sources.
  • A demonstrable track record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts from individual donors, corporations, and foundations.
  • At least 3 years of team management and leadership experience with a focus on interpersonal coaching.
  • Proven success operating in ambiguous and changing environments with a strong ability to manage and prioritize projects.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically and implement new ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey ideas clearly and listen to the views of others.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Experience using Salesforce or a similar donor database.
  • Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • A commitment to community and national service and the development of young people as leaders.
