Summary

Lead web application development teams at SMART Technologies to build innovative education applications that enhance classroom learning experiences. Bridge engineering, product, design, and external contractors to deliver exceptional solutions.

Key Responsibilities: Lead and mentor software developer teams, implement agile processes, coordinate with external contractors, collaborate with Product and UX teams on roadmap planning, and balance technical debt with feature development. Remove blockers, ensure code quality and best practices, and communicate project status to senior leadership.
Skills & Tools: Strong leadership and mentoring abilities with experience managing agile development teams. Excellent collaboration and communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, plus deep understanding of modern software development practices, CI/CD, and quality assurance.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field with 5+ years of web application software development experience and 3+ years in engineering management. Proven track record leading complex software products and managing external development partnerships, with preferred experience in education technology.
Location: In-Person - Calgary, AB
Compensation: CA$130K–CA$180K/yr (estimated)

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead web application development teams building innovative education applications that make a real difference in education every day. In this role, you'll drive technical execution while fostering a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture. You will bridge the gap between engineering, product, design, and external contractors to deliver exceptional learning solutions.
What You'll Do:

Lead and mentor teams of software developers, fostering their technical growth and career development
Implement and refine agile development processes to maximize team velocity and product quality
Coordinate and synchronize development efforts with external contractor teams, ensuring alignment on technical standards, timelines, and deliverables
Collaborate closely with Product Management and User Experience teams on project planning, roadmap prioritization, and delivery timelines
Balance technical debt with feature development to maintain sustainable engineering velocity
Participate in hands-on technical discussions and architecture decisions
Ensure code quality, engineering best practices, and scalability across your teams
Remove blockers and create an environment where engineers can do their best work
Communicate project status, risks, and successes to senior leadership and internal stakeholders

What You'll Bring:

Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or similar field
5+ years of web application software development experience with 3+ years in engineering management
Proven track record of leading agile development teams and delivering complex software products
Experience managing relationships with contractors and external development partners
Strong collaboration skills with Product Management and UX/Design teams
Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Understanding of modern software development practices, CI/CD, and quality assurance
Ability to balance technical excellence with business priorities and timelines
Passion for education technology
Experience with education applications or EdTech products (preferred)
