Summary

Join Elsevier as a Software Engineer III to collaborate in an agile team developing innovative solutions in publishing technology. You will work full-stack, implementing front-end and back-end solutions while contributing to the Submissions Platform evolution.

Key Responsibilities: Interface with team members to finalize requirements, write and review specifications, implement software designs following coding best practices, and resolve technical issues in an Agile environment. You will implement full testing pyramids, infrastructure as code, and maintain awareness of operational requirements for logging and alerting.
Skills & Tools: Required technical skills include Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban), JAVA, Python, MVC, HTML, XML, SQL, REST APIs, CI/CD processes (Jenkins, Spinnaker), TDD/BDD testing frameworks, Git, and familiarity with AI/ML platforms. Preferred skills include C# .Net, microservices architecture, JIRA, Confluence, and experience with LLMs and vector embeddings.
Qualifications: Candidates must have practical hands-on experience with Agile software development and demonstrated proficiency with the required technologies listed above. Knowledge of software engineering design principles and architectural techniques to solve complex problems using industry best practices is essential.

Works with peers within Submissions Platform and the wider technology groups to continually evolve and embed best-in-class software engineering.

About the Role

The role will involve working together with an agile team to get from a defined user problem to an implemented solution. You will collaborate with other engineers and non-engineers to deliver outcomes for our users. You will work truly full stack, implementing front-end and back-end, tests (full testing pyramid) and infrastructure as code.

Responsibilities

  • Interfacing with other technical personnel or team members to finalize requirements.
  • Writing and reviewing portions of detailed specifications for the development of system components of moderate complexity.
  • Working closely with other development team members to understand moderately complex product requirements and translate them into software designs.
  • Successfully implement development processes, coding best practices, and code reviews.
  • Operating in an Agile development environment while collaborating with key stakeholders.
  • Resolving technical issues as necessary. Aware of operational requirements and implementation for logging, instrumentation, and alerting.
  • Keeping abreast of new technology developments.​

Requirements

  • Possess knowledge and practical experience of Agile software development methodologies (Scrum and/or Kanban)
  • Have current hands-on experience of working with the following or similar technologies:
  • JAVA, Python, MVC, HTML, XML, SQL, C# .Net knowledge a plus. Experience with services / APIs and microservices architecture (REST/Json, Swagger), CI / CD (Jenkins, Spinnaker), SQL. Knowledge of TDD / BDD Testing frameworks (NUnit, XUnit, Selenium, Gherkin / Cucumber and a mocking framework)
  • Familiarity with LLMs, vectors and embedding useful
  • Experience using AI/ML platforms and tools such as Open AI GPT, Azure Cognitive Services, Google Cloud AI, or AWS AI services
  • Have knowledge of software engineering design principle, architect techniques to solve complex problems using best industry practices and processes
  • Have experience with with Jira, Confluence, Git
