Summary

This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to play a key role in the ongoing development of Cell Press partnerships and the overall Cell Press publishing business. Our preference is for a candidate based in one of the main Cell Press office locations in the US (Cambridge, MA), UK (London, Oxford), Netherlands (Amsterdam), or China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen).

About the role

As the Executive Publisher of Cell Press Societies, you will take on the vital role of overseeing collaborations with our partners and ensuring the success of their journals. You will offer strategic guidance while upholding the highest publishing standards. In this position, you will work closely with our dedicated Cell Press team of experts in editorial, production, marketing, press, and branded websites, as well as with specialists across Elsevier in areas such as ethics and business development. You will also cultivate partnerships with other editorial teams at Cell Press, contributing significantly to the overarching publishing strategy. This role offers a unique dual opportunity where you can enjoy the independence of driving journal success while being part of a larger community dedicated to impactful scientific publishing and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic journals development and premium business relationships management of the Cell Press partner journal portfolio.
  • Devising clear strategic plans for content management, impact, and growth with a clear business plan that supports the needs of the partner and the publisher.
  • Supporting the highest ethical standards in published content.
  • Identifying and develop new business opportunities for the Cell Press portfolio that maps to the strategic direction of Cell Press.
  • Organizing and implementing proposals for new partnerships and evaluate current relationships.
  • Driving the setup and management of society contracts and renewals including business plans and multi-year strategy plans.
  • Providing reporting support and relevant updates to our partners.
  • Partnering with key society partners to implement best demonstrated practices, drive efficiencies and strengthen scientific content.
  • Maintaining exceptional, collaborative relationships and build trust with society partners, the broader scientific community, and key stakeholders within the company.
  • Representing Cell Press/Elsevier externally to the research and publishing communities.
  • Traveling locally or internationally to meet with our partners and attend their scientific meetings. 
  • Partnering with key internal resources in marketing, publishing operations, and journal management to create the best author and society experience.

Requirements

  • Have a degree in an area of science covered by Cell Press, advanced degree is valued. Coupled with at least 5 years of experience in the publishing industry, and 2 years of experience working with society partners at an executive level.
  • Have an appreciation of the contribution that scientific societies and institutions make to the publishing landscape.
  • Display a clear understanding of publishing industry standards, developments, and business model trends.
  • Have executive level communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated publishing and editorial expertise or comparable business and management skills.
  • Hae a proven track record of working independently to achieve business goals.
  • Are a creative and innovative problem-solving attitude.
  • Are a result-oriented and proactive approach.
  • Have advanced experience in data gathering, interpretation, and constructive presentation.
  • Display excellent networking, negotiation, diplomacy, and collaboration skills.
  • Able to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Able to travel and collaborate internationally.
