About our Team

Our STMJ (Science, Technology, and Medical Journals) team publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed research that drives progress across scientific and medical disciplines. We collaborate closely with authors, editors, reviewers, and societies to ensure the integrity and impact of the published work. Through innovation in editorial workflows and publishing technology, we help global research communities discover, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge that advances science and improves lives. Our team is made up of 9 publishers at various levels (3 executive, 3 senior, 3 publisher) and a mix of experienced scientific editors, and we are based around the world across 13 time zones. This publisher will be based in the US, Oxford, or London offices.

About the Role

In the Life Sciences Journals team, we are looking for a bright and enthusiastic Associate Publisher with responsibility to oversee a list of international proprietary and society journals primarily in biophysics (with some molecular biology), as well as to drive expansion of our networks, partnerships, and market share in line with the overall STM Journals strategy and objectives.

Any applicant needs to have a good educational background and keen interest in academic publishing; good communication skills; and would have to be prepared to work somewhat independently while also contributing to team initiatives as necessary.

To excel in this position, you understand the importance of maintaining a strong network both with and beyond current Elsevier editors, authors, and societies. The role balances academic research knowledge with a keen interest in new online and Open Access developments as well as a strong sense for relationship management. You should also be able to work across teams with our STMJ Centers of Expertise as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Staying up to date with market developments, to identify and map market needs and business opportunities. (Market awareness)
  • Combining market knowledge and data analysis, develop a portfolio strategy that will deliver on STMJ targets and to ensure your portfolio remains fully competitive. Experience in data gathering, presentation, and interpretation essential. (Portfolio strategy)
  • Managing content growth organically and by (title) acquisition as well as managing innovation of content formats and content extensions and channels. (Portfolio development)
  • Negotiating and managing contractual relationships with journal editors.
  • Managing the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.
  • Staying in close contact with editors and editorial boards within journal portfolio, and engage with stakeholders across the research communities, including research institutes, societies, and funding bodies. (Relationship building)
  • Participating in projects that are run across STMJ and contribute to projects within Elsevier that require STMJ representation. This could be relevant for the particular department, related to a pilot for a new product, service or business model or even to improving certain processes within our organization.

Requirements

  • Have a university degree and a minimum of 3 years' publishing experience.
  • Have relevant STM publishing experience, including experience in open access and working with Societies, with a proven track record of setting and realizing goals, and of making a difference to a program.
  • Display excellent networking and communication skills in English.
  • Able to adapt to change, handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and work equally well collaboratively or independently with colleagues and customers at different levels, in different locations, and from different cultures, in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • Are data-driven mindset and a keen interest in new online developments.
  • Have financial and commercial awareness, with strategic awareness and eye for business development.
  • Are results-oriented with a strong can-do attitude.
  • Have willingness to travel (on average 2-4 trips per year).

U.S. National Base Pay Range: $58,000 - $96,700. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates. If performed in New York City, the pay range is $66,700 - $111,200. This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
