Summary
Join Handshake AI as a Summer 2026 Research Intern to own a scoped research project in large language model development and evaluation, with the goal of producing an archive-ready manuscript or top-tier conference submission under mentorship from a senior scientist.
Key Responsibilities: Own and execute a scoped research project focusing on LLM post-training, evaluation, or data efficiency, working toward publishable research contributions that ship into production systems.
Skills & Tools: Proficiency with large language models and hands-on experience with PyTorch, JAX, or distributed training frameworks; strong empirical rigor and passion for open-ended AI research questions; extra credit for experience in RLHF, evaluation tooling, or open-source contributions.
Qualifications: Current PhD student in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or related field with a publication track record at top venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, EMNLP, ICLR). Hands-on experience training and experimenting with LLMs is required.
Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, United States
Compensation: $12,000 – $15,000/month (approximately $144,000 – $180,000/year)
