Summary

Grammarly seeks a Back-End Software Engineer to develop core product features and infrastructure for their AI writing platform used by 40 million users. This role offers the opportunity to build scalable production systems while contributing to innovation and mentoring team members.

Key Responsibilities: Build and support high-traffic production services with emphasis on availability, collaborate across teams to deliver product offerings, and propose scalable systems and architecture for the future. Engineers will ship impactful features, contribute to documentation and testing practices, and have opportunities to mentor new hires.
Skills & Tools: Strong software engineering fundamentals including algorithms and data structures, experience with Java or JVM languages, and proficiency with AWS or other cloud platforms (GCP, Azure). Must demonstrate excellent problem-solving, production system debugging experience, and alignment with EAGER values (ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, remarkable).
Qualifications: Minimum three years of Back-End development experience, preferably with Java or JVM languages, and hands-on experience building, deploying, and debugging production systems at scale. The Opportunity 

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for Back-End Software Engineers to join our engineering teams. As a Back-End Engineer at Grammarly, you will play a critical role in building core parts of the Grammarly product offering, infrastructure, and features to help 40 million users write more clearly and effectively every day.

In this role, you will:

  • Start building and pushing code in your first week and ship impactful features in your first few months.
  • Build and support production services with high call rates. 
  • Target high availability for consumer and enterprise customers. 
  • Learn how to build infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Collaborate widely with internal teams, such as Core, Growth, Enterprise, Trust, and Data, to deliver delightful product offerings to our customers. 
  • Contribute to an engineering culture with a strong emphasis on documentation, testing, and user experience.
  • Evaluate the systems and technology in place today while proposing systems and architecture that can scale for the future. 
  • Have the opportunity to mentor new hires.

Qualifications

  • Brings at least three years of experience in Back-End development, ideally using Java or other JVM languages.
  • Displays excellent software engineering fundamentals, including knowledge of algorithms and data structures.
  • Demonstrates perseverance when faced with tough technical issues.
  • Has some experience with AWS or other cloud offerings (GCP, Azure, etc.). 
  • Has experience building, deploying, and debugging production systems at scale.
  • Cares about the end-user experience and strives to ensure high quality.

Grammarly takes a market-based approach to compensation, which means base pay may vary depending on your location. Our US locations are categorized into two compensation zones based on proximity to our hub locations.

Base pay may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The expected salary ranges for this position are outlined below by compensation zone and may be modified in the future.

Zone 1: $180,000 - $264,000/year (USD)
