Summary

The News Literacy Project is seeking a part-time Newsletter Intern to assist in creating and monitoring newsletter content focused on news literacy while gaining valuable nonprofit sector experience. This role impacts thousands of educators and hundreds of thousands of students across the country.

Key Responsibilities: Assist in producing two newsletters (The Sift® and Scroll Smarter), track trending news literacy topics, write and develop newsletter content, and contribute to A/B testing and audience engagement efforts. The intern will also be mentored in online writing, editing, and audience engagement strategies.
Skills & Tools: Strong writing, communication, and research skills with exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects effectively. Proficiency with Microsoft Word is required, with familiarity in photo/video editing software and SurveyMonkey as a plus.
Qualifications: Strong interest in news literacy and media familiarity required; experience with educational systems is a plus. Candidates should be undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees in journalism, communications, reporting, research, or related fields.
Location: Remote from Washington D.C., United States (virtual position; must be authorized to work in the United States)

The News Literacy Project empowers educators to teach middle and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. We are at an exciting inflection point for our work, and we are making critical investments to rapidly scale our growth and impact. To that end, we are seeking a Newsletter Intern who can help monitor trending news literacy topics and create newsletter content in support of our work teaching young people how to be savvier consumers of information. This is a great opportunity for a student pursuing a degree in journalism or communications to gain a range of nonprofit experience, deepen research and writing skills, and have an immediate impact in the field of news literacy.

This position reports to the Senior Manager of Education Content. 


About the position

The Newsletter Intern will work closely with the Senior Manager of Education Content to assist in producing two NLP newsletters: The Sift® for educators and Scroll Smarter for families. The position is ideal for a motivated person pursuing a career in reporting, research, communications, or a related field, especially in a news, nonprofit or educational organization. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. 

Specifically, in this job, you will:

  • Assist in tracking trending news literacy topics, including artificial intelligence, journalism, social media, misinformation and press freedom. 
  • Provide expertise on student news topics and perspectives. 
  • Write and develop newsletter content. 
  • Assist in tracking A/B testing results and producing surveys, as well as contribute to our efforts to reach and engage readers. 
  • Be mentored in online writing, editing and audience engagement. 

This part-time position is virtual and is 15-20 hours per week. The timeline of this internship is approximately January to June 2026. Highly qualified candidates who live in, and are authorized to work in, the United States are encouraged to apply. 


About you

This position will directly impact many thousands of educators and hundreds of thousands of students in schools across the country and plays a pivotal role in shaping and achieving our organizational strategy. As the Newsletter Intern you will partner with the Senior Manager of Education Content to publish high quality newsletters sent to thousands of educators and families. While we do not expect candidates to meet all qualifications, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:

  • A strong interest in supporting NLP’s mission.
  • Be a news junkie familiar with different types of media outlets — including print, online, audio, TV and opinion sites — and a passion for staying on top of the latest news cycle.
  • Exceptional communication, research and analytical skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word. (Familiarity with SurveyMonkey and EveryAction is a plus.) 
  • Experience with photo and video editing software. 
  • Ability to work well alone and under direct supervision.
  • Familiarity with grades 6-12 education system and the ability to understand and empathize with educators teaching in those grades.

Compensation and benefits

The salary for this position is $17 an hour. This is a nonexempt position and is not eligible for benefits.
