Summary

Communications Intern at The News Literacy Project supporting the nonprofit's mission to promote news literacy among U.S. students through marketing campaigns, media relations, and communication strategies.

Key Responsibilities: Writing promotional content, managing social media posts, assisting with media targeting and database management, conducting market research, analyzing performance metrics, and brainstorming story ideas for media outlets.
Skills & Tools: Strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent research and analytical abilities, proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, understanding of marketing and promotional strategies, and familiarity with CRMs (preferably Every Action).
Qualifications: Pursuing or holding a degree in marketing or communications preferred; familiarity with K-12 education system and various news outlets is advantageous. Experience with CRMs and knowledge of nonprofit work is a plus.
Location: Remote from Washington, District of Columbia, United States (can work from anywhere in the U.S.)

Who we are

The News Literacy Project (NLP), founded in 2008, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building a national movement to ensure that all students are skilled in news literacy before high school graduation, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers. NLP is the country’s leading provider of news literacy education and works with educators in all 50 states. 

This position is ideal for students pursuing a degree or professionals beginning a career in marketing or communications. It will provide a range of nonprofit experience.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • News junkie habits, including a familiarity with different types of news outlets – print, online, audio, TV, and news & opinion sites – and a passion for staying informed and up to date.

We’re looking for someone who will hit the ground running with a collegial style of engagement and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Media Relations.

About the role

The main responsibilities for this position include the ability to:

  • Apply excellent communication and collaboration skills while assisting with writing and the development of promotional copy for email, web, social media, press releases and other formats.
  • Assist with the conceptualization and development of ongoing and new educator marketing campaigns.
  • Assist with media targeting and updating Cision/media database and other lists and databases.
  • Share important clips with the staff.
  • Help maintain an updated newsroom section of the organization’s website.
  • Research metropolitan media markets for digital campaign targeting and media pitching.
  • Brainstorm story ideas and pitch them to relevant media outlets.
  • Write and develop social media posts for Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, LinkedIn and others.
  • Assist with the writing of opinion pieces and web posts when needed.
  • Assist with tracking, recording and analyzing metrics, including email and social media performance data, as well as other administrative needs as required.


About you

In addition to the qualifications noted at earlier, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of emerging and existing promotional strategies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with CRMs, preferably Every Action, a plus.
  • Familiarity with K-12 education system and the ability to understand and empathize with educators teaching in those grades.
  • Ability to work well alone and under direct supervision.


Compensation

The position involves a maximum of 25 hours per week and pays $15-$17 per hour. This is a non-exempt position and is not eligible for benefits. This position is virtual; the successful candidate can live anywhere in the United States.
