Summary

Build innovative Android features for Duolingo's Math, Music, Monetization, or Design Systems teams that impact over half a billion learners worldwide. Lead technical direction and mentor junior engineers while developing native Kotlin applications.

Key Responsibilities: Develop, release, and maintain native Android application features in Kotlin across various product areas including learning features, premium subscriptions, and design systems. Collaborate with product design and backend teams while mentoring junior engineers and setting technical direction.
Skills & Tools: Strong Kotlin and native Android development expertise with experience building reactive apps; ability to design clean, maintainable APIs and write testable code. Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders, with demonstrated leadership and self-direction.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field with minimum 5 years of Android programming experience. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, mentor others, and design systems at scale.
Location: New York, New York, United States (relocation required)
Compensation: Not provided by employer. Typical compensation for this role is $180,000 – $320,000/year based on title (Senior/Staff/Senior Staff), seniority level, Duolingo's market position, and New York location.

Math team: 

  • As an Android engineer on the Math team, you will help build the technology that changes how people around the world learn Math. The features that you ship will help learners to develop core math skills in a fun, engaging way. We’re looking for engineers who love building new products and features.

Music team:

  • As an Android engineer on the Music team, you will help build the technology that changes how people around the world learn Music. The features that you ship will help learners to develop core music skills light sight reading and ear training in a fun, engaging way. We’re looking for engineers who love building new products and features and bring fresh ideas about teaching Music on mobile devices.

Monetization Area:

  • As an Android engineer in the Monetization Area, you will work on our premium subscriptions—Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max—the key revenue drivers behind our business. Your contributions will touch packaging, pricing, and hooks for our subscriptions, and game mechanics such as Hearts and Gems. We're seeking engineers who are passionate about bottom-line business impact, and who bring fresh insights and a creative technical approach.
  • The Monetization Area focuses on Duolingo's key business drivers—subscriptions, ads, and in-app purchases. Our area's goal is to build the best premium experiences for our learners while ensuring the sustainability and success of our business model. You will play an instrumental role in the strategic direction of Duolingo by developing and refining the methods that make our monetization efforts more effective and efficient

Design Systems team:

  • At Duolingo we take great pride in our thoughtful and beautiful design language on web, iOS, and Android. The Design Systems team is modernizing our UI components to improve the consistency and cohesion across all of Duolingo’s learning experiences. Over the next year, the team is expanding to establish our first motion and animation systems to systemize and scale more of what makes Duolingo so delightful.

You Will...

  • Collaborate on software projects with product design and backend aspects
  • Develop, release, and maintain native Android application features in Kotlin
  • Mentor and set technical direction for junior engineers on the team

You Have...

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
  • Programming experience in Kotlin on Android
  • The ability to communicate technical issues effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work from or relocate to New York, NY.

Exceptional Candidates Will Have...

  • A minimum of 5 years of programming experience building reactive Android apps
  • Demonstrated self-direction, with a desire both to learn new techniques and mentor others
  • Outstanding leadership and negotiation skills
  • Experience designing clean and maintainable APIs
  • Experience writing unit tests and testable code

We post a multi-level salary range for all of our roles.

The multi-level salary range for this role is $148,800 - $274,600 and is not inclusive of the rest of our awesome portfolio that includes equity compensation and world-class benefits. Our salary ranges are the same for all US locations. Your recruiter can share more details about the range for a specific level during the hiring process. The actual salary within the range is determined by many factors including but not limited to, skills, experience, education, and internal equity.
