Summary

AI Research Engineer role at Duolingo focused on solving complex technical problems in education technology. You'll conduct large-scale experiments with millions of learners to drive data-driven product improvements and contribute findings to the broader research community.

Key Responsibilities: Solve ambitious problems using appropriate AI/ML tools, collaborate cross-functionally to implement ideas in the product, and prototype solutions while evaluating their impact at scale. Share research findings internally and publish to the broader research community.
Skills & Tools: Strong debugging, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities with a creative, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial approach to R&D. Expertise in AI/ML research methodology, experimental design, and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in Computer Science or related technical field (expected by August 2025) with a portfolio of impactful work such as publications, open-source projects, or AI internships. Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA required.
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Compensation: Estimated: $160,000 – $210,000/year based on new PhD graduate level, AI research engineer title, Duolingo's market position as a well-funded edtech leader, and Pittsburgh cost of living.

What you'll do...

  • Solve our most ambitious problems with the right tool for the task
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to bring your ideas to life in the product
  • Identify problems, prototype solutions, evaluate their return on investment, and then implement the best solution at scale to improve the lives of our millions of learners each day
  • Share your findings both within Duolingo as well as to the broader research community

What we're looking for...

  • You have an Ph.D. in computer science or related technical field (or expect to by August 2025)
  • A portfolio of impactful work, in the form of (for example) publications, open-source projects, or AI internships
  • Ability to relocate to Pittsburgh, PA
  • A creative, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial approach to R&D
  • Strong debugging and critical thinking skills
