About Lumion (joinlumion.com)
Lumion is an all-in-one software platform for trade and technical schools, streamlining the full student lifecycle from lead generation and tuition payments to enrollment, reporting, and alumni tracking. In essence, we are building the ultimate operating system for career and trade schools, enabling institutions to scale efficiently and serve more students. We support schools across a wide range of industries – from healthcare and construction to transportation, culinary arts, and cosmetology – empowering them to enroll more students and deliver life-changing education. Lumion is a well-funded startup, having recently raised $10.7 M in seed financing led by TTV Capital with participation from Tusk Venture Partners. Our mission is to be the trusted infrastructure for the future of skilled education, and we are obsessed with helping the next generation of tradespeople launch successful careers.
Location: Fully Remote (USA or Canada) – Lumion’s engineering team is remote-first. Candidates must reside in and be authorized to work in the United States or Canada.
The Role
Join our rapidly expanding startup in revolutionizing software for trade and technical schools. As a Senior Software Engineer (PHP/Laravel), you will play a pivotal role in building and enhancing our all-in-one education management platform (encompassing enrollment, payment processing, and student information systems). We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual who sets ambitious goals and consistently delivers results on tight timelines. You should be comfortable working full-stack or in a backend-focused capacity, developing robust Laravel-based solutions and integrating modern frontend components (we use Laravel Livewire for interactive UIs). In our fast-paced environment, excellent communication and a self-driven attitude are crucial. You’ll be joining a talented, mission-driven team that values collaboration and bold innovation. If you are passionate about our mission to create the “operating system” for trade schools and eager to have a massive impact, we want to hear from you!
Responsibilities
- Build and enhance core platforms: Design, develop, and improve features across Lumion’s SaaS platform for schools and students, aligning solutions with our mission and product goals.
- Innovate and scale: Work on new projects that broaden Lumion’s impact – from streamlining student enrollment to optimizing tuition payment workflows – while ensuring the platform scales securely and efficiently.
- Improve performance and reliability: Continuously refactor and optimize existing code for speed and scalability. Diagnose and resolve software issues and bottlenecks across the stack, including third-party integration issues.
- Code quality and testing: Write clean, maintainable code with an emphasis on quality. Create automated tests (we use Pest for a modern PHP testing experience) to ensure reliability and regression prevention.
- Collaborate and iterate: Work closely with cross-functional team members (product, design, customer success) to gather requirements and translate them into effective technical solutions. Participate in code reviews, share knowledge, and mentor others as needed.
Required Skills
- Mastery of Laravel (version 11+): Deep understanding of the Laravel framework (including its newest features and best practices) for building large-scale applications.
- Proficiency in PHP 8: Strong command of modern PHP (8.x) and object-oriented programming principles, including familiarity with PHP 8 features and typing.
- RESTful API development: Solid experience designing, building, and consuming REST APIs to integrate services and third-party systems.
- Front-end familiarity: Comfort with modern front-end frameworks or tools (e.g. Livewire, Vue.js, React, or Alpine.js) and the ability to integrate front-end components with Laravel backends.
- Version control: Expertise in Git and collaborative workflows (pull requests, code reviews, branching strategies).
- Testing & quality: Experience writing automated tests (using PHPUnit and/or Pest).
- Experience: At least 3 years of professional experience developing user-facing web applications (preferably as a full-stack or backend engineer). A history of building and shipping features in a SaaS or startup environment is ideal.
Who We're Looking For
- Mission-driven: You are passionate about our mission to transform trade education and are motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact.
- Organized & autonomous: You can manage your time well, prioritize effectively, and thrive in a self-directed environment.
- Resilient & hardworking: You have a strong work ethic and the determination to overcome challenges, learning and adapting as the product and company evolve.
- Proven achiever: A track record of setting ambitious goals and delivering. You take ownership of outcomes and consistently push beyond your comfort zone to hit objectives.
- Growth mindset: Enthusiastic about business growth and eager to contribute to it. You embrace feedback, seek continuous improvement, and are excited by the chance to wear multiple hats in a growing startup.
- Team player: Collaborative and quick-thinking, you enjoy working with others to solve problems. You communicate clearly and can explain complex tech concepts to non-engineers when needed.
Work Environment
Expect a culture of intense focus, innovation, and impactful work. We operate in a fast-paced startup environment where everyone is driven to build something extraordinary. Your role will be crucial in expanding and evolving our technology offerings – your creativity and ideas will directly shape the future of trade school management software, from how students enroll and pay for school to how institutions track and support student success. While we outline projects and goals, we also value initiative: you’ll have the freedom to propose improvements and experiment with new technologies to advance our platform. We also believe in balancing hard work with a casual, flexible atmosphere – results matter more than formalities.
