Summary

Lead a Quality Engineering team at Instructure, driving testing strategy and execution to ensure high-quality educational technology products. Play a critical role in fostering a quality-first culture across the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities: Lead and mentor a QA team through performance reviews and career development; define and implement comprehensive testing strategies covering functional, integration, regression, performance, and security testing. Oversee test plans and automation frameworks, collaborate with cross-functional teams, establish quality metrics, and champion continuous improvement initiatives.
Skills & Tools: Strong understanding of SDLCs, Agile methodologies, and QA best practices; extensive experience with test automation frameworks (Selenium, Playwright) and various testing methodologies (black-box, white-box, performance, security, accessibility). Excellent communication, leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills with experience in cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) preferred.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience); 10+ years in software QA/quality engineering with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role. Proven experience building, managing, and mentoring high-performing QA teams.

Compensation: $130K–$180K/yr (estimated)

As a Manager, Quality Engineering at Instructure, Inc., you will lead and mentor a team of Quality Engineers, driving the strategy and execution of testing efforts to ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable, and scalable educational technology products. You will play a critical role in fostering a culture of quality throughout the software development lifecycle.

What you will do:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Quality Engineers, including performance reviews, coaching, and career development.

  • Define and implement comprehensive testing strategies, methodologies, and processes for multiple product lines, covering functional, integration, regression, performance, and security testing.

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of test plans, test cases, and test data, ensuring thorough test coverage aligned with product requirements.

  • Drive adoption and implementation of automation frameworks and tools to improve testing efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, and other cross-functional teams to understand product vision, requirements, and technical design, providing early feedback on quality considerations.

  • Establish and monitor key quality metrics, reporting on team performance, product quality trends, and risks to stakeholders.

  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives within the QA organization and across broader engineering teams.

  • Participate in hiring and onboarding new Quality Engineers.

  • Stay current with industry best practices in quality assurance and software testing.

 

What you need to know/have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent practical experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in software quality assurance or quality engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.

  • Proven experience building, managing, and mentoring high-performing QA teams.

  • Strong understanding of software development life cycles (SDLCs), Agile methodologies, and QA best practices.

  • Extensive experience with test automation frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Playwright).

  • Solid understanding of various types and methodologies of testing (e.g., black-box, white-box, performance, security, accessibility).

  • Experience with cloud-based platforms (AWS, GCP) and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to strategically plan and execute quality initiatives that align with business goals.

  • Experience with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
