Summary

The Exploratorium seeks an On-Call Custodian to maintain cleanliness and safety across museum facilities, reporting to the Custodial Supervisor/Manager. This variable-hours position requires flexibility to work assigned shifts including potential overtime.

Key Responsibilities: Key duties include cleaning and maintaining museum facilities using custodial equipment, operating floor machines and cleaning tools, refilling supplies, and responding promptly to custodial requests across classrooms, offices, restrooms, and public areas.
Skills & Tools: Candidates must be able to read and follow written and oral instructions, operate custodial equipment safely, and have the physical capability to lift 35 lbs and push/pull 50 lbs while working at various heights.
Qualifications: Requires a minimum of 6 months of custodial experience and/or successful completion of basic custodial training. Must demonstrate physical ability to bend, kneel, climb ladders, and move between locations throughout the museum.
Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, United States (Piers 15/17)
Compensation: $25.85/hour (Step 1 of 6-step union pay scale)

SUMMARY

This position reports to the Custodial Supervisor/Manager and is responsible for the general cleanliness of the museum. Applicants must be available to work any assigned shifts and be able to work overtime. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Proper operation of custodial equipment including but not limited to:
  • Floor machines, i.e. vacuums, scrubbers
  • Mops and mop buckets
  • Floor, wall, window squeegees
  • Ladders, step stools, scissor lift, fork lift
  • Basic understanding of safety issues and adherence to safety standards related to custodial work
  • Safety equipment for personal safety
  • Building occupant safety
  • Public safety
  • Clean and maintain all custodial stations: classrooms, office space, restrooms, entrance ways, work spaces, parking lots and food service areas
  • Collecting trash/recycling/compost and disposing in proper receptacles
  • Dusting, high, intermediate and low areas
  • Sweeping, dust mopping, dry mopping, damp mopping, vacuuming
  • Shampooing, scrubbing, steam cleaning, stripping, waxing and sealing
  • Refilling supplies; paper dispensers, soap dispensers
  • Cleaning and disinfecting urinals, commodes, wash basins, partitions, windows and walls.
  • Use custodial equipment to carry out job responsibilities
  • Respond quickly to custodial messages
  • Additional custodial duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 6 months custodial experience and/or successful completion of basic custodial training
  • Ability to read, write and follow simple oral and written instructions
