Summary

Senior Accountant at Strategic Education responsible for executing daily and month-end accounting activities, financial analysis, and subledger maintenance while supporting audit processes and driving process improvements.

Key Responsibilities: Compile and analyze data to prepare journal entries, maintain and reconcile subledgers, prepare monthly reconciliations and variance analyses, and assist with internal/external audits. Generate daily reports, communicate with internal and external contacts to resolve issues, and identify opportunities for process improvement.
Skills & Tools: Demonstrated knowledge of ERP/General Ledger systems (Oracle/PeopleSoft preferred), intermediate US GAAP knowledge, strong MS Excel proficiency, extreme attention to detail, and strong analytical skills. Excellent oral and written communication abilities and willingness to work extended hours during close cycles required.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in accounting from a regionally accredited institution and 4-6 years of industry and/or public accounting experience, including experience with a publicly-traded company. CPA certification preferred but not required.
Location: Hybrid in Herndon, Virginia, United States (1-2 days onsite per week); alternate location option in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Compensation: $82,800 – $124,200/year

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Accountant to join our dynamic Accounting team. Reporting directly to the Director of Accounting, this role is responsible for executing daily and month-end accounting activities, preparing account reconciliations, performing financial analysis, and maintaining subledgers as needed.

This position will be onsite 1-2 days a week at one of our locations, Herndon VA or Minneapolis MN, depending on where you are located.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Compile and analyze data to prepare journal entries for various accounts and transactions.
  • Maintain and reconcile various subledgers.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations for balance sheet accounts, including independently identifying and resolving reconciling items in support of ending account balances.
  • Prepare various month-end schedules and variance analyses.
  • Apply the financial policies and procedures of the company and communicate to management any inconsistencies or issues identified during the daily or month-end close processes.
  • Independently communicate with other company personnel and contacts outside of the company to gather needed information and/or resolve issues.
  • Generate and send daily reports to various departments as needed.
  • Work on various SOX tasks and projects.
  • Assists with requests related to internal and external audits and work with auditors to resolve audit questions.
  • Reviews existing processes identifies opportunities for improvement and helps to implement approved changes.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Job Skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a commonly used ERP/General Ledger system (Oracle/PeopleSoft financials is a plus).
  • Hands-on experience with subledger systems.
  • Experience with Blackline is a plus.
  • Extreme attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to manipulate financial data.
  • Intermediate knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Excel (pivots, VLOOKUP’s, nested formulas, etc.).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to work extra hours during month-end/quarter-end close cycle.

Work Experience:

  • 4-6 years of industry and/or public accounting experience, including experience with a publicly-traded company.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting from a regionally accredited institution.

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

  • CPA preferred but not required.

Other:

  • Travel via plane, car, and public transportation is not required to perform this job.
  • Must have the flexibility to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs warrant.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs.
  • Mobility within the office including movement from floor to floor.
  • Access information using a computer.
  • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
